In its formative two decades, social media technology has been mirrored by the ways in which we work together, consume information, and transact. Social media has entwined itself so endemically in the life of every one of us between MySpace and Friendster and the myriad of apps that now seem fashionable, like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn. This paper will discuss the emergence of these technologies within a broader perspective of development and their influence on culture and society. The Dawn: Profile Customization and Limited Interactions One could create static pages that reflected themselves and message someone, in conjunction with creating a network of friends with MySpace and Friendster. The established features created the first-generation social media. With increased profile customization, these platforms also made it easier for users to connect with friends. Facebook enabled people to socialize online by providing a structured profile, an advanced news feed, and stimulating continuous engagement with the platform.
